About us

Trinitite, known as Atomic Glass, created during the first Atomic Bomb Test in July 1945 at the Trinity Site in southern New Mexico. This rock was created from the sand and other materials at the Trinity Site during the intense heat of that first atomic test. Recent studies indicate that, upon explosion, the ground was likely pushed down initially, then rebounded, forcing material into the fireball. While most trinitite is light green (due to the iron in the sand), some samples contain the iron from the tower on which the "Gadget" was detonated- those pieces look black. Other rare samples have a red tint derived from the copper from the electrical wire used in the experiment.
